Fox Lake | Northern France

The very first water to open on the Abbey complex back in 2000, the 25 acre Fox holds a massive head of carp with huge numbers of 30 and 40lb fish.

Not surprisingly the bigger fish are also a major draw to the visiting angler and at the very top we have none other than Humpy, the enormous Fox Lake mirror that holds the current lake record at an awesome 69lb 12oz. The fish is a real character and over the next few year's has the potential to challenge Shoulders as the 'King of Abbey'. Not far behind though are a rake of up-and-coming fish.

2011 has proved to be an amazing year on Fox with the venue producing an ever increasing number of 50lb plus carp.  One week in November 8 anglers shared a catch of 13 different 50lb's, including 12 that had not been over that magic barrier before!  With this catch and other catch reports we believe there are in excess of 45 fifties in the lake, with the average for 2011 being an impressive 42lb.

Fox Lake contains plenty of gravel areas, sand and silt patches, as well as weedbeds that always attract fish. The Lake is shaped like the letter P, and the top bank is no fishing as is the point on the left hand side. This ensures everyone has plenty of water to go at. The fish can be found anywhere on Fox, and as pressure will move them there are not really any favoured swims - the fish are just as likely to be tucked away in a corner as out in the open.

    BEATING THE CRAYS
There are crays in all the lakes on the complex but they only seem to be an issue on Fox lake. Last year (2010) I found what I believe to be a great weapon for getting around them. I’m not a fan of meshing or armouring baits and I found that whilst some boilies will get slaughtered by the crays, they do not like Liver baits. I mentioned this to a few of my pals and they found the same thing. Crays do not seem to like Liver, or at any rate something in the liver baits that Jon Finch makes for Bankside. As a result the hook bait of choice for me on Fox lake will always be the Bankside D-Liver dumbbell wafters tipped with one of Avid Sight Stops. They are a brilliant bait that the fish love but the crays seem to leave alone. In fact I’ve had them nick my hair stop but leave the bait in place before now. If you are fishing Fox I can recommend taking a pot or two of these beauties over.

Are Crayfish a problem on Fox?

Crayfish are present in Fox and activity from them can vary greatly from swim to swim and even from day to day. What we have found is that the crayfish keep their heads down if you have carp in the swim. However, it's best to come prepared with the right gear to keep them at bay.

Do zig rigs work on Fox?

Zigs work on all of the Abbey venues but can be particularly effective in the spring on Fox. Through March, April and May it's well worth trying zigs if nothing is happening on the bottom, starting at two-thirds depth and moving shallower if you see activity in front. Don't forget they also work at night.

Is there a long walk to any of the swims?

Definitely not! Fox lake offers extremely comfortable fishing with parking behind every swim.
