Heron Lake | Northern France

If you're hoping to latch into one of Abbey Lakes real biggie's during the course of your stay, then a session on Heron will give you the best chance of doing it. Along with the famous Shoulders, who is one of the few 80lb carp in the world that is easily accessible to all, you have the likes of the fantastic Bruno, White Tips and the Grey Lady to fish for, all of which would provide a personal best for most anglers.

2011 has shown in excess of 50 fish over the magical fifty barrier, with the average weight being around the 37-38lb mark.

Heron is the biggest of the carp lakes on the Abbey complex and covers 35 acres. We take up to 17 anglers at any one time and like Fox it is a deep gravel pit, open on the one side but tree lined on the other. Depths once again are between 12 and 15 feet but on the bottom of Heron there are a lot more features to find. Bars, gulleys, steep sided margins, quiet bays plus an island and some snaggy areas means that there are plenty of things to fish to in this lake.

The early part of the season on Abbey fishes in a very similar way to many of the popular UK day ticket waters in that the carp spend much of their time mid water and above. We have found all the Abbey fish are extremely catchable when up in the water and if you have carp in front of you but are struggling to get bites, don't be afraid to try some zigs rigs. Depth wise, a good starting point is two thirds of the water you have in front of you, but don't be afraid to experiment until you start to pick up fish. For a hookbait, small yellow or orange pop-ups work well as does a piece of yellow or even black rig foam, day or night.

Frequently Asked Questions for Heron Lake

Do I need any specialist gear to catch on Heron?
Can I bring my bait boat?
Are there any going baits on Heron?
    Can I move swims mid-session?
Do I need any specialist gear to catch on Heron?

Absolutely not. In fact, tackling Heron is very much like fishing many of the medium sized gravel pits found in the UK. The venue can be weedy at times so tackle up accordingly with a sensible mainline and you can't really go wrong.

Can I bring my bait boat?

Bait boats can be used on all of the Abbey complex and if you have one we recommend that you bring it along.

Are there any going baits on Heron?

The Heron fish see a wide variety of bait and will respond to most good quality baits, however Mainline Cell has been one of the best in 2011.

    Can I move swims mid-session?

Of course! Unlike some french venues where you are stuck in one swim for the duration of your session, you can move freely around Heron as much as you like and provided there is room, even switch to another lake.
